Resin Bound

Resin Bound Surfaces

A durable, low-maintenance surface where performance depends on preparation as much as finish.

Resin bound surfacing offers a clean, contemporary finish that works beautifully for driveways, patios and pathways. Its smooth appearance, permeability and durability make it an increasingly popular choice — but when done properly, resin bound is as much about technical execution as visual design.

At Tom Child, we approach resin bound surfaces with the same care and discipline as any structural garden element. While the finished surface may look effortless, the performance and lifespan of resin bound installations depend overwhelmingly on correct preparation.

Preparation is everything

Up to 90% of a successful resin bound installation lies beneath the surface. Groundworks, sub-base construction, edge restraints and drainage all play a critical role in how the surface performs over time.

We ensure:

  • A correctly specified and compacted sub-base

  • Stable, well-defined edging to prevent movement or cracking

  • Proper falls and drainage to support permeability

  • Accurate mixing ratios and controlled application conditions

Cutting corners at any stage can lead to surface failure, discolouration or premature wear — something we actively design out from the start.

Performance & lifespan

When installed correctly, a resin bound surface can last 15–25 years with minimal maintenance. It is:

  • Permeable, allowing water to drain naturally

  • Resistant to cracking and frost damage

  • Smooth underfoot and wheelchair-friendly

  • Low maintenance compared to traditional paving

We specify materials based on use — whether the surface is carrying vehicle loads, regular foot traffic or acting as a visual transition between garden zones.

Where resin bound works best

Resin bound surfacing is particularly well suited to:

  • Driveways — offering a seamless, contemporary alternative to block paving

  • Patios — clean, comfortable and visually calm

  • Garden paths — flowing naturally through planting and landscape features

Each application is designed in context, ensuring the surface complements the wider garden rather than dominating it.

A considered, professional finish

Resin bound is not simply a decorative layer — it is a constructed surface that demands experience, precision and the right conditions to install well. Our approach combines technical knowledge with an understanding of how the surface should look, feel and perform over time.

Based in Purley, Tom Child designs and installs resin bound surfaces across Cheam, Wallington, Chipstead and the surrounding areas — delivering results that are built properly from the ground up.
